ABOUT JOAN

"Art is a great equalizer.
When you look at a painting you don't care
if the artist has a Ph.D. from an Ivy League
university or they never graduated from high school.
A resumé means
nothing, the portfolio says it all."
--Joan Frain
Joan is an internationally recognized, multi-award winning
artist who works and teaches from her home studio. Her works can be
found in various horticultural books and publications, as well as private
collections.A botanical artist and instructor for over thirty years,
Joan Frain received her degree in graphic design but quickly combined
her love of gardening with her passion for fine art to focus solely
on botanical illustration. Joan's first job upon graduating from college
was as staff artist for Longwood Gardens. She held this position until
the birth of her first child. Desire to be a stay-at-home mom led to
the addition of a studio to her home and the launch of a freelance career.
Joan continued to teach the Botanical Illustration course that she developed
at Longwood for 18 years.
Joan is past president and current board member of The Philadelphia
Society of Botanical Illustrators. She is a member of the Center for
the Creative Arts, the American Society of Botanical Artists, the Delaware
Center for Horticulture, and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
Married with two grown children, Joan divides her time between her home
in Exton Pennsylvania and the family beach house in Ocean City New Jersey.

Joan has chosen not to include a long, tedious resumé
on this site.
If you have a burning desire to see it you can contact Joan
and she will be happy to send it to you!
